Why Reflections Fascinate Me

Writer: Roshani ShahRoshani Shah

There’s something about reflections that draws me in every time. I don’t know if it’s the symmetry, the distortion, or just the way they make the ordinary look extraordinary but I just love capturing them.

Maybe it goes back to my childhood. I was always fascinated by paintings, especially watercolours. I wasn’t the best at it, actually! haha. But I loved my drawing classes. I’d always look forward to them, eager to create something on paper, even if my brush didn’t always do what I wanted.

Back then, I had a brush. Now, I have a camera. And somehow, what I used to imagine and paint as a child, I now see in the real world reflections in puddles, glass, and even in the smallest unexpected places. The way light plays with surfaces, creating a whole new perspective, feels like a living painting to me.

When I spot a reflection, I don’t think about where the image will go or what I’ll do with it. I just love noticing them. I love capturing them. And maybe that’s enough the simple joy of seeing the world in a different way, through my lens.

How to See and Capture Reflections :

If reflections fascinate you too, here are a few things that might help you notice and shoot them better:

1. Look Beyond the Obvious – Reflections aren’t just in lakes and mirrors. Wet streets, shop windows, car surfaces, and even the human eye hold beautiful reflections. Slow down and observe.

2. Change Your Perspective – Sometimes, a reflection doesn’t stand out until you shift your angle. Try going lower, moving to the side, or tilting your camera small changes can make a huge difference.

3. Use Natural Light Creatively – Golden hour light makes reflections warmer and dreamier, while artificial lights at night can turn a simple puddle into an abstract painting.

4. Play with Distortion – Not all reflections have to be perfect mirrors. Water ripples, curved glass, and metallic surfaces create abstract, almost surreal compositions. Experiment with them!

Photography is such a vast world, and we all have something that pulls us in whether it’s reflections, shadows, silhouettes, or something else entirely.

What is that one style of photography that fascinates you? What’s the one thing that makes you stop, observe, and reach for your camera?

Would love to hear your thoughts!
